The system prevents duplicate contacts by checking against the primary email and primary phone number on the contact. If you have an existing contact in your database with the same email or phone as new a contact that you are trying to manually add or import, it will not be created.
The best way to avoid duplicates is to ensure the contacts you enter always include either a primary email and/or primary phone number.
You may find duplicate contacts if the contacts were entered without the primary email or phone fields filled out. If you ever find duplicate contacts, you will want to choose one as the contact card to work with and fully delete the extra one. You can copy information over to the main contact before archiving the extra one if needed.
